Julia Bertram and Benny Baltes have been a couple for a long time and formed a dream team for years at the Klingenberg town winery (later renamed Weingut Benedikt Baltes). Now they have decided to return to their home in the Ahr region and concentrate fully on Julia’s parents’ winery. The balancing act between Franconia and the Ahr proved too great. Now they will implement their ideas of organic viticulture on the extremely steep slopes around Dernau. They converted in the very first year; the goal is biodynamic certification, and both dream of being able to implement permaculture with sheep in the vineyard here. The winery boasts some of the best locations on the Ahr, and Benny conjures up very fine Pinot with depth, always balanced, never loud, but always full of expression and enjoyable to drink. For us, the new star in the sky above the Ahr.

Wine Information

The hand-picked grapes were fermented spontaneously in local oak barrels and then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Colour

Muted cherry red with ruby-red highlights towards the rim.

Nose

The aroma of the 2022 Dernauer Hardtberg reveals malty notes, some cedarwood, leather, tobacco, and plenty of umami. With the necessary oxygen, small dark berries, cranberries, and figs enchant the nose. A wine with wonderful potential that needs oxygen and time to fully open.

Palate

On the tongue, it once again plays on the umami theme, with impressions of meat broth and soy sauce ever-present in its youth. The juicy fruit notes of plum, blackberry, and dark cherry frame everything beautifully. Grilled and braised dishes are a must here. Excellent aging potential! Enjoy lightly chilled, decanted with plenty of headroom in Burgundy glasses.
