Wine Information

The Frauenberg is located in the southern Wonnegau region, north of Hohen-Sülzen in the direction of Flörsheim, at an altitude of up to 280 meters with a slope of up to 40%. The vineyard was first mentioned in 1290 as “an frauwenhalten” (an Frauwenhalten) and was then owned by a nunnery. It lies 250 meters above sea level and is characterized by limestone gravel on pure limestone rock. The vines in this exposed location must be able to cope with both heat and cool winds. To access the minerals, the vines must have very deep roots. The Frauenberg grapes were harvested by hand, rigorously selected, spontaneously fermented, and aged in single-barrel and double-barrel barrels.

Nose

The 2022 Großes Gewächs from the Nieder-Flörsheim Frauenberg offers plenty of charm and creaminess on the nose, combined with a subtle smoky note. With air, the wine becomes spicier and darker. There is hardly any fruit here. There is a hint of lemon, lemon balm, and lemongrass. But expression has never been the essence of the Frauenberg. It is always finesse.

Palate

This finesse, the pure and subtle, even the enigmatic, also characterizes the palate. The Frauenberg Riesling is charming, with a subtle extract sweetness in a yellow and white-fleshed fruit. The rocky spice is also present here, but not quite as prominent. But there’s already an impressive balance of fruit, spice, piquant herbal notes, and a grippy extract and phenol that will carry the wine for decades, even though it’s still young and developing. And in both the extract and the tannin, the wine’s subtlety can be found, like a cut and polished semiprecious stone.

The 2022 Riesling Nieder-Flörsheimer Frauenberg Grosses Gewächs benefited from its 280m-elevation and exposed nature that ensures ventilation. This is always the last site to be harvested. The nose is still shy. Gentle cream, fresh, green hazelnut kernel, Amalfi lemon and lemon balm hints only appear slowly and remain subdued. It strikes an immediate balance on the palate: coolness, creaminess, balm-like and concentrated texture that seems soothing, cooling and benign. Very concentrated notes of ripe lemon appear alongside phenolics reminiscent of tea leaf tannins. This is stunning, layered, pure, but above all, textured. A marvel. The long finish holds a delicious flicker of grapefruit zest. (Bone-dry)
