Product description for Artazu Santa Cruz de Artazu blanco 2018
Information about the wine
Garnacha Blanca is an indigenous white wine grape of the Ebro region and thus also of Navarre. However, the grape variety had declined in cultivation in the region for decades. Pioneering projects like that of Artazu are now giving it the attention it deserves. Santa Cruz de Artazu Blanco, for example, is made from a single varietal of Garnacha Blanca. The grapes come from two vineyards located at 450 to 600 meters above sea level, which have clay and limestone soils. Fermentation takes place in 500-liter oak barrels, followed by ageing on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks.
Colour
Light gold
Nose
Stone fruits such as quince and yellow apple are underscored by stimulating, fresh citrus tones. Spicy and mineral notes contribute to the subtle nose.
Palate
With a creamy texture and remarkable grip, the Santa Cruz de Artazu Blanco has a magnificent presence in the mouth. Fullness and linearity form a unity in this white wine. The balance of vibrant acidity and fruit intensity is also top-notch. The subtle bitterness in the animating finish is typical of the Garnacha Blanca white wine grape. Overall, this is a structured, elegant, and complex white wine. There aren’t many Garnacha Blancas as rich in personality.

Score: (93-94)
I hadn’t tasted the top of the range white since the 2015 vintage, and the 2018 Santa Cruz de Artazu Blanco was still not bottled and in tank in November 2021. It was produced with grapes from two plots of Garnacha Blanca they planted 15 years ago on white limestone and clay soils at 450 and 600 meters in altitude. It fermented in 500-liter oak barrels, where it stayed for a month, and then matured in stainless steel. It’s flinty and has a somewhat reductive style, with smoky and spicy undertones. The wine is only 13.1% alcohol and has retained 6.15 grams of acidity with a pH of 3.22. It has some rusticity, a little bit in the style of a white Rhône, with volume and a juicy palate but with acidity. They expect to produce some 4,000 bottles of this very soon.
