Product description for Artadi Viñas de Gain Blanco 2018 (bio)
Colour
Light lemon yellow, delicate green reflections
Nose
The 2018 Viura immediately combines a serious, mature character with plenty of spice and origin on the nose. Aromatic intensity, a fine woody dignity, and penetrating elegance are married. Grilled pineapple, quince, and mirabelle plum make a loud, yellow-fruity opening. Salted caramel stands out alongside sage and lemon balm. I think I detect a hint of brown butter, as well as butterscotch. The wood leaves behind nuances of coconut and a delicate hint of vanilla. These last two components can also be misinterpreted, but they appear subtle and fine. Finesse is once again expressed through its ethereal intensity.
Palate
The cool, continental climate with its strong amplitudes of day and night temperature leaves its mark. Powerful and skillfully charged with its yellow fruitiness, it simultaneously counteracts this with plenty of texture and structure. The fruitiness resembles the nose. Mirabelle plum and grilled pineapple dominate the picture. Beneath this, a plentiful, linear limestone minerality emerges. This is enormously stimulating and breaks up its fullness. Full of finesse and elegance, it conveys a cool, almost salty impression. The roasted aromas manifest themselves in the form of cold smoke and subtle wood spice. A hint of creamy peach cream cake emerges in the finish. With patience and temperature, a bacony mouthfeel develops on the palate. A blind tasting comparison with wines from Meursault would be fascinating.

Wine Advocate
Score: (92-93)
The white 2018 Viñas de Gaín Blanco comes from a number of vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar at 450 to 700 meters in altitude on clay and limestone soils. In this rainy and cooler year, it fermented with some skins and then matured for two years and four months in stainless steel (plus a handful of barrels) and finished with 13% alcohol and a pH of 3.33. It has a strong and acute note of fennel and aniseed, white flowers and musk, with a lively palate from the cool vintage; it’s balanced and has purity, without very showy aromas—a white for food. 12,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2020. In 2020 and 2021, there will be a little less white wine, as they have added some white grapes to the reds.
