Information about the Wine
Bodegas Artadi is one of Spain’s absolute top addresses and has pioneered the transition from cellar-influenced to terroir-influenced wines in Rioja. The organically certified single-vineyard wine “Valdegines” comes from a four-hectare, east-facing vineyard at an altitude of around 600 meters in the municipality of Laguardia. The 36-year-old Tempranillo vines grow on clayey-calcareous soil. Recently, Artadi’s single-vineyard wines have been supplemented with an additional 2 to 3 percent white Viura. For even more freshness, according to winemaker Carlos López de Lacalle. As with all Artadi wines, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously. During aging, the winery increasingly relies on used and larger oak barrels, which gives the wines even greater clarity and an unvarnished elegance.
Colour
Cherry red
Nose
The nose is subtle and multifaceted, open and expressive. It smells of violets and fresh red fruits such as cherries. Peppery notes and a cool mineral note emerge in the background. Overall, the bouquet is very clear and stimulating.
Palate
Valdegines always offers crisp red fruit, supported by magnificent freshness. This is also the case with the 2022 vintage. The wine has fine, polished tannins and a lean body. It is energetic, open, and expressive, with a silky texture and a straightforward, juicy finish. All of this appears crystal clear and perfectly balanced: the alcohol and wood are fantastically integrated. The icing on the cake is the elegant, delicately spicy finish. It’s incredibly enjoyable to drink. Overall, the Valdegines 2022 has a brilliant drinking flow and stands for impressive finesse and precision.

Wine Advocate
Score: 94
The 2022 Valdeginés comes from a warm and dry year and fermented in open-top oak vats and matured in barrels and nine months in demi-muids. However, the wine has more freshness than expected, and the nose comes through as fresher than that of the 2023 I tasted next to it. This vineyard has an east exposure and soil with a higher percentage of clay, with limestone one meter down that gives it punch. It has very fine, chalky tannins. Like many 2022s, it finished in the higher part of the estimated window last year. 14,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.

The 2022 Valdeginés, from Laguardia, opens with vibrant red fruit, floral violet notes and a subtle herbal character reminiscent of undergrowth. The palate is tight, energetic and structured, with a chalky texture and a juicy, fresh, grippy finish.
