Description
Product description for Abbatucci Monte Bianco, Rouge VdF 2022 (bio)Domaine Comte Abbatucci is one of Corsica’s undisputed flagship estates and currently covers 21 hectares on granite soils. In addition to viticulture, the estate also cultivates olives, fruit and vegetables, as well as forestry and has its own restaurant. Abbatucci began as a kind of ark, preserving the old indigenous varieties in the 1960s and 1970s while modern viticulture switched to international varieties. Since French AOC regulations only permit limited use of these varieties, the wines are marketed exclusively as Vin de France, or “Vin de France” (country wine). The estate operates according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture and is Demeter-certified. The 2023 Faustine Rosé Vielles Vignes is a blend of 90% Sciaccarellu and 10% Barbarossa. The grapes for this wine grow at a good 100 meters above sea level on the granite-rich soils of the valley. Yields are rather low at just under 25 hl/ha. The grapes are harvested early in the morning, destemmed, and pressed immediately. The wine is fermented at 18 degrees Celsius and then aged in stainless steel for five months before being bottled unfined and only lightly filtered.
Colour
Transparent ruby red with a garnet-red rim.
Nose
The nose of Abbatucci’s 2022 Monte Bianco could be simply described as “Kombinat Kirsch” (cherry combination): sour cherries, black cherries, bright red sweet cherries, and small, stony sour cherries, along with a delicate pitted note, fill its fruit basket. Added to this are fine floral notes of violets, cassis leaves, juniper berries, and allspice, which provide a spicy counterbalance to the cascades of cherries.
Palate
On the palate, it flows with silky elegance, contoured by the tightly woven, fine-grained tannins, which feel as fine as magnesium dust on the tongue. A delicate astringency frames the unbridled fruit. The tannins enrich the aroma with their tart, green character, lending it an uninhibited flow. The fresh acidity carries it into an ethereally cool finish with the red-fruity afterglow of the eternal cherry.
