Product description for Schätzel Steiner Silvaner 20-23 NV (bio)

Info

This Silvaner Solera consists of 25% each from 2020 and 2021, 15% from 2022, and 35% from 2023. This is the first bottling from the Silvaner Solera, the virgin wine, so to speak. The vines are located in Nackenheim am Rothenberg with ungrafted vines and in the extensive Hipping vineyard site. The slope can be classified as steep to very steep. Rotliegendes is well-known in this part of the Rhine. The grapes hang primarily and preferably in the shade. Naturally, all work is done by hand. After harvest, the grapes are crushed with feet and cold macerated for 36 hours. Natural alcoholic and malolactic fermentation takes place in 1200l oak barrels. This is followed by aging under the flor yeast. The wine matures in the barrels using the solera system. On average, this bottling lasts at least 30 months.

Colour

Bright golden yellow with slight cloudiness and light reflections.

Nose

This Silvaner Solera impresses with its clear aromas of blossoms and chamomile. The chamomile is intense and reminiscent of a fresh infusion. You have to like it. Anise, fennel greens, and fennel seeds bring a mixture of vegetal and ethereal aromas into play. Artichoke also fits wonderfully into this idea. The fruit has delicate hints of ripe stone fruit, such as mirabelle plum and apricot. Behind these – much more exciting – lie allspice, cinnamon, clove, and white pepper. Sage, thyme, and sage stand out alongside fresh mint. Memories of tea from the beginning repeatedly emerge. Paired with a slightly bready component, like sourdough crumble, this is very, very appealing.

Palate

The Steiner Silvaner presents itself with plenty of energy. By no means heavy, but full of pull and acidity, with plenty of grip and structure. A rich, dense sip of wine. Purist and austere. Full-flowing and plenty of pull on the palate. It develops a fine floral aroma of orange blossom and tangerine peel. This has an invigorating and beguiling effect. It lingers on the palate and cheeks for minutes and is a great pleasure.

Wine Advocate

Score: 93+

From macerated fruits from old, partly ungrafted Sylvaner vines in the steep grands crus Nackenheimer Rothenberg and Niersteiner Hipping, the unfiltered, amber-colored NV Silvaner Steiner 20-23 is a beautifully aromatic blend of the four vintages from 2020 to 2023, with a dominant 35% part of the latter. Aged under flor for 30 months, the wine opens with a clear, deep, fresh and aromatic, almost Traminer-like bouquet with iodine, peppery and orange zest aromas. Medium-bodied yet generous and playful in both texture and flavors, this smooth, finessed and saline, very stimulating, warming and sustainable Sylvaner is one of the most interesting I tasted in 2024. It was bottled unfiltered with 11% stated alcohol under Diam 10 cork. Tasted in November 2024.

Vinous

Score: (91-93)

The NV Silvaner Steiner 20-23 was picked in the Hipping site, on red rhyolite, with one parcel of un-grafted vines that are 85-90 years old. Yellow fruit, lemon peel and dandelion blossom swing alongside yeast on the nose. The palate is exquisitely slender, pervaded by lemon and showing yeastiness, but not in the full autolytic mode of the Riesling. This is gentler and easier but wonderfully salty nonetheless.
