Information about the Wine

The Les Fouillouses vineyard in Juliénas covers 39 hectares, of which the Chastels own 1.05 hectares. The site is located just northwest of the village center on slate-like blue volcanic rock (pierre bleu) and diorite. The Gamay noir à jus blanc, as it is fully known, is around 70 years old and yields between 25 and 35 hl/ha. After hand-picking and sorting, whole bunches were used. Undamaged berries were placed at the bottom of the concrete cuboid, and crushed ones were placed on top, allowing the Gamay to undergo a semi-carbonic maceration for around twelve days. The wine was then aged for twelve months in five-year-old oak.

Medium, fairly transparent garnet red

Nose

The Juliénas creates a bouquet that combines slightly sweet, tart, and earthy aromas reminiscent of violets, roses, and lilacs, lightly roasted herbs, sweet cherries, and raspberries on a bed of moist earth and a touch of moss.

Palate

On the palate, Les Fouillouses initially offers pure, clear fruit of dark berries and cherries, into which a hint of licorice and a few Indian spices slowly creeps. This Beaujolais Cru impresses with a vital acid structure and powdery, fine tannins combined with slightly smoky and salty notes. On the one hand, it has a lot of power, on the other, a lot of energy, and appears very polished right up to the long finish.

Aromas of sweet berries, cherries, rose petals, violets and spices preface the 2020 Juliénas Les Fouillouses, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine with lively acids, powdery tannins and a saline finish. While it remains a powerful, muscular wine, it’s the most polished Juliénas from Romanesca to date.
