Product description for Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique 2022 (bio)
Olivier Humbrecht: The first Pinot Gris vines were planted in the Rangen vineyard in 1963. After acquiring Clos-Saint-Urbain in 1977, the winery planted additional Pinot Gris vines between 1978 and 1999. In some vintages, a marked difference in behavior can be observed between the oldest and youngest vines. The dark volcanic sedimentary soils decompose, revealing interesting clays and minerals that have penetrated deep into the greywacke parent rock. 2022 was a high-yielding vintage, more pronounced in the younger vines, so the yield difference between old and younger vines was an important factor that led us to separate the two wines. Of course, we also have younger vines at our domaine, with an average age of 39 years!
Intense golden yellow with copper reflections.
The aroma of the 2022 Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique reveals juicy apples, orange flesh, apricots, elderflowers, roses, and fresh ginger. A delicately smoky scent wafts from the glass, and at the same time, we encounter a cool impression and multifaceted freshness reminiscent of citrus fruit and grapefruit zest. Upon contact with oxygen, anise and cardamom notes emerge.
On the palate, it starts juicy and with a beautiful acidity that tickles the palate; subtle tart notes stimulate the appetite and end in a long finish. A wonderful wine that combines power with freshness, making it a perfect accompaniment to food. Be sure to decant and enjoy it from a larger glass, not too cold.
