Product description for Henri & Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain rouge “Combe Bazin” AOC 2022 (bio)

Information

The Saint-Romain Combe Bazin comes from the vineyard of the same name in the southeastern part of the appellation, towards Auxey-Duresses. Combe Bazin also faces southeast and lies at an altitude of 375 to 385 meters. The vineyard has white limestone soil, known as the Calcosol sur Marne de Saint-Romain, and is planted with 30-year-old vines. After hand-harvesting, partial destemming and spontaneous fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, followed by a mixture of pigeage and remontage, i.e., under-punching and overflowing of the pomace cap. Malolactic fermentation took place spontaneously in barrels. Aging lasted for ten to twelve months in a mixture of 228-, 350-, and 500-liter barriques, as well as in tonneaux, of which no more than 10% are replaced annually. The wine was tasted daily, and the barrels were racked whenever Frédéric Buisson deemed it appropriate. The wine was fined with bentonite and filtered very coarsely. Sulfur was added only at bottling, with a maximum of 40 to 50 mg/l of total sulfite. The winery is now Biodyvin-certified.

Colour

Medium, slightly transparent carmine red.

Nose

The Saint-Romain Combe Bazin 2022 is reminiscent of flowers, rock, and a tonic mixture of fruit, zest, a touch of iron, tobacco, and undergrowth. More specifically, the fruit is reminiscent of sweet and sour cherries, some juice and zest of blood oranges, cranberries, and raspberries.

Palate

On the palate, the Saint-Romain presents itself as serious, dry, firm, and quite powerful. There’s a successful balance between fruit, acidity, and tannin. You can detect a certain warmth in the wine, but also some cool notes. The tannins seem slightly grainy, and the texture is still somewhat influenced by the yeast. Overall, this is a fine Pinot Noir that becomes more sensual with increasing aeration.

Vinous

Score: 88

The 2022 Saint-Romain Combe Bazin has a pretty bouquet with black cherries, wild strawberry fruit, and a touch of blood orange. The palate is medium-bodied with a confit-like entry and a fine bead of acidity. It is slightly granular in texture with hints of fig lending some complexity on the finish. Fine.
