Information about the Wine

The production of rosés from red and white grapes has a long tradition in the Duero region. In this case, it is referred to as a “clarete.” The first-class Felix Callejo winery, still something of an insider tip, pays homage to this ancient tradition: The “Viña Pilar Clarete 2022” is made from 50 percent Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) and 50 percent of the indigenous white grape variety Albillo Mayor. The grapes come from two vineyards at over 900 meters above sea level on the plateau above the Duero Valley. Due to climate change, these cooler locations are becoming increasingly sought after. For this clarete, the blue and white grapes were spontaneously fermented together, and the wine matured for 14 months on the fine lees in concrete eggs and 500-liter oak barrels.

Nose

The bouquet is expressive with floral aromas and red fruits. The nose is sensually fresh and balanced, with a mineral undertone that contributes to its complexity.

Palate

In the mouth, this rosé displays a great balance of acidity, body, and tannins. Everything is fabulously integrated and harmonious, including the 14% alcohol. The “Viña Pilar Clarete 2022” has fine, silky tannins, an elegant texture, and a beautiful length on the finish. This is a rosé with a focus on refinement, beautifully combining the red fruit of Tempranillo and the invigorating freshness of Albillo Mayor. Further proof that Ribera del Duero can do much more than just red wine.
