Product description for Duemani Altrovino Costa Toscana IGP 2022 (bio)

Altrovino is a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc from biodynamically farmed hillside vineyards on the Tuscan coast, not far from Riparbella. The vines are rooted in barren clay-limestone soils with a high stone content and views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Vinification is characterized by hand-harvesting, careful selection, and spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks. Aging takes place in concrete for around eight months to preserve freshness, texture, and primary fruit. The wine then ages for eight to ten months in French and Slavonian oak. Altrovino is the house’s invitingly approachable, yet structured entry-level wine.

Color

Crimson with violet reflections and a black core.

Nose

The 2022 Altrovino from Duemani appears dense and almost impenetrable at first sniff. It’s as if you’re smelling a black-violet wall, until the outlines eventually soften and begin to speak: fruity aroma! Black berries, mulberries, blackberries, plums, and black cherries open tentatively, then the grilled pointed peppers shove their way in. Earthy tones, a touch of graphite, more fully ripe red peppers like piment d’Espelette and pickled plums.

Palate

Juicy on the palate with deep, dark, extract-rich fruit. Plum jam, allspice, blackberry pulp, cassis, and pickled griottines outline its fruity nature. With enormous depth and concentration for an entry-level wine, the Altrovino’s structure is also in the right place: the dense, tightly knit tannins are velvety soft on the palate, the acidity stretches across the entire palate, accelerating it into a long, extract-rich finish with a black fruit aftertaste.

Wine Advocate

Score: 94

The Duemani 2022 Merlot Cabernet Franc Altrovino (made with organic and biodynamic fruit) is fermented in cement and ages in a combination of French and Slavonian oak. Showing a fleshed-out, medium-plus texture, the wine offers dark fruit, spice and earthy root. The bouquet leans into savory and dark aromas with hints of forest floor and underbrush. There is a licorice-like signature that winemaker Luca D’Attoma says often emerges in this wine.
