Sebastian Bordthäuser: The first impression of the 2017 La Géniale Patronne from Domaine du Coulet is taken up by the tannins, which wrap themselves tightly and finely around the youthful, fresh fruit, like panne velvet. Tightly woven and dense, they define the length of this exceptional Syrah rather than its overall volume or a pompous appearance. Nothing superficial stands in the way of the variety, its terroir, and its master, whose goals are clearly defined: delicacy, finesse, and an orchestral finish with peppered length. The Cornas “La Géniale Patronne” comes from weathered granite soils interspersed with clay and limestone silt. This 100% Syrah wine is made from a selection of young and old vines from the middle sections of Barret’s slopes. With an average yield of 25hl/ha, it is fermented in steel and then matured in concrete eggs.

Colour

Dark ruby red with a black core.

Nose

The purity of Mattheiu Barret’s Syrah repeatedly makes you take a deep breath; he knows how to bring out the essence of the variety so clearly and unvarnished. The dark fruit of blackberries and mulberries is tartly counteracted by elderberries and wild raspberries. With subtle smoky notes in the top note, distinct iron notes are reminiscent of a freshly opened hare and sweet, warm blood. Juniper and black pepper round out this formidable hunting experience.
