Product description for Tenuta di Castellaro EúxEnos Amphore IGT 2021 (bio)

Wine Information

The word eúxenos comes from ancient Greek and means hospitable. It was engraved on some wine amphorae recovered in 1996 from a shipwreck dating back to 300 BC, a few hundred meters off the coast of Lipari. This wine, called Eúxenos, is a Malvasia delle Lipari made from volcanic sand. The vines, trained in the alberello system, are located at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level. Their grapes were harvested by hand in the last days of September. After destemming and gentle crushing of the grapes, spontaneous fermentation took place in a cocciopesto amphora. Fermentation and maceration, with periodic immersion of the cap, lasted approximately 60 days. The wine then aged for a further ten months in amphorae.

Colour

light gold

Nose

The nose of this amphora wine is reminiscent of white peach, candied pineapple and fig, almonds tossed in honey, as well as fennel, thyme, and maquis. The wine proves to be intense, serious, and yet charming.

Palate

On the palate, the Eúxenos is intense and complex. Yellow kiwis and grapefruit with peel are added to the fruit. Most impressive, however, is the distinctive tannin, which is excellently integrated, accompanied by plenty of juice and fullness, as well as a lively acidity that offers a decent punch. All of this is very well balanced in this wine.
