Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht:
The Heimbourg single vineyard site is located on a small, steep hill rising from the Vosges Mountains east of Turckheim. Its steep slopes run southwest to west on a marl-limestone-sandstone terroir dating back to the Oligocene. These coastal, ferruginous limestones contain a high proportion of silica, have a high active limestone content (over 45%), and are relatively poor in clay. All of these elements ensure excellent drainage and allow the Riesling grape variety to ripen slowly while maintaining good acidity.
Vineyard Information
The sunshine of the 2020 vintage contributed to perfect ripening of the grapes without botrytis, and an intense but slow fermentation produced a very dry wine. The wine matured on its fermentation lees in large old oak barrels until bottling and was bottled 17 months after the harvest.
Color
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
The 2020 Riesling Heimbourg is an expressive white wine that demands a decanter from the outset. It reflects the intense limestone terroir, complemented by oranges, grapefruit, mango, and angelica. Yeasty and smoky notes, ginger, and anise are also present. A densely packed and complex bouquet that will reveal earthy notes of truffle with further maturation.
Palate
Wow! What a powerhouse, yet playful and aristocratic wine we have here, delicate and precise. The long finish reveals more citrus fruits and a saline note, crisply dry, with yeasty spice. It’s a wonderful food companion and a wine that will reveal itself even more beautifully and perfectly in the coming years. Those impatient to open it now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.

Wine Advocate
Score: 94
From a southwest to west-facing limestone vineyard, the 2020 Riesling Heimbourg is pure, fresh and intense, with chalky, lemony and iodine notes as well as ethereal notes of fir needles. Rich and enormously saline on the palate, this is a compact, tensioned and grippy Riesling with fine tannins and the structure of Pinot Noir. This is a wine that needs a few years in the cellar before drinking. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2022.
