The 2023 Sophie is a blend of 94% Chardonnay, 4% Viognier, and 2% Sauvignon Blanc. Half of the grapes come from the Lieben Aich vineyard in Terlano and half from Kaltern’s Mazzon vineyard. Lieben Aich is a warm, west-facing hillside vineyard at 300 m above sea level. Chardonnay and Sauvignon grow there on loamy sandy soil interspersed with porphyry weathering. The Chardonnay and Viognier on Mazzon form Manincor’s steepest vineyard, with gradients of up to 100%. It is southwest-facing at 350–400 m, with calcareous, clayey subsoil. The grapes were hand-harvested in early September and remained in the press for four hours until maceration to extract aroma and structure. Fermentation took place spontaneously with the grapes’ own yeasts in wooden vats of various sizes. The Sophie was aged on the fine lees for nine months.

Colour

Light straw yellow with green reflections.

Nose

With fine roasted notes on the nose, the Sophie speaks of its aging in various container sizes: roasted hazelnuts, yellow fruits such as apricots, orange zest, acacia, and linden blossoms. Minerally underpinned by the impression of wet stone, the Sophie is a benchmark for the region and continues to recall stone fruits such as quince in brown butter and stone fruit kernels. A wine that will continue to blossom with increasing maturity.

Palate

With a delicate melt and creamy texture, the Sophie always has that slightly beeswaxy extract sweetness on the first sip. Open-hearted and approachable, the fine fruit is precisely framed by the skillful aging in wood, underpinned by delicate salty notes and a renewed nutty character. Already hedonistic and life-affirming in its youth, Sophie always benefits from three to five additional years of bottle aging to reach its full potential.
