Description
Product description for Huet Le Mont Moelleux 2002 (bio)
Christoph Raffelt: On the palate, the 2017 Le Mont Moelleux is already impressively complex. The 53 grams of sweetness are by no means intrusive; on the contrary, you wonder where the wine has hidden it, so clearly balanced is the sweetness by the 4.9 grams of acidity. The wine is extremely harmonious and precise. The acid structure and vital minerality are particularly inspiring, as are the fine notes of Indian spices, tart oranges, and stony components. In the long finish, the honey-like sweetness, paired with salted almonds, appears in a furious, long finish. What a harmonious wine and what potential!
Info
Above the estate’s tuffeau caves on the first Vouvray plateau with a south-facing exposure, lies Le Mont, one of the most prized vineyards in the appellation, known for its history and long-lasting wines. Nine hectares of pebbly flint soil and deep green clay ensure a unique expression of the Chenin Blanc variety. Its terroir brings forth intensity and minerality as well as a refined structure, supported by beautiful acidity.
Colour
Sparkling golden yellow
Nose
What a revelation. A cornucopia of diverse aromas pours out here for the discerning connoisseur. Acacia honey and fruit bread. A hint of clove, saffron, and light tobacco. Dried apricots and tarte tatin. A seemingly endless wealth of facets. White pepper and fully ripe, yellow stone fruit. Candied pineapple and dried herbs. Earthy, mushroomy notes also develop as the temperature rises, leaving a hint of Alba truffle.
Palate
The 2002 Le Mont Moelleux appears surprisingly cool and juicy. The multiple aromas on the nose are perfectly showcased. The order of the aromas can be arranged in any order. A true palate ping-pong. The sweetness is present, but not overpowering. The minerality comes through wonderfully and is enhanced by the acidity. The acidity plays a decisive role in giving this wine elegance, vitality, freshness, and drinking pleasure. Sweetness and acidity once again complement each other perfectly. The aromas linger on the palate. The wine never seems heavy, but rather light-footed and playful. The sweetness flows into a wonderfully smooth texture. After almost 20 years, it doesn’t seem tired in the slightest. This is just beginning to be really enjoyable.

Score: 90
The 2002 Moelleux Le Mont is laced with the essence of apricot, crushed autumn leaves, honey, minerals and earthiness. Despite its intense color, the 2002 is now a pretty delicate wine. Ultimately, it feels just a bit rustic and hollow, especially on the mid-palate. I would not push my luck too far on aging.
