Information about the Wine
Bodegas Artadi is one of Spain’s absolute top addresses and has pioneered the transition from cellar-influenced to terroir-influenced wines in Rioja. The organically certified single-vineyard wine “La Poza de Ballesteros” comes from a 1.2-hectare, west-facing vineyard at an altitude of around 600 meters in the municipality of Elvillar. We are located in the higher and cooler part of Rioja Alavesa, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The 65-year-old Tempranillo vines grow on loamy-sandy and calcareous soil. As with all Artadi wines, the grapes are destemmed and fermented spontaneously. During aging, the winery increasingly relies on used and larger oak barrels, which gives the wines even greater clarity and an unvarnished elegance.
Colour
Cherry red
Nose
The bouquet offers plenty of dark fruit, from black cherry to blackberry. The fruit is not overpowering, but rather enters into a sensual liaison with a light spiciness and earthy minerality. Overall, the nose is fresh, soft, and expressive. The wine is immediately present in the glass and hardly needs any air to unfold.
Palate
Compared to other single-vineyard wines from Bodegas Artadi, such as Valdegines and San Lazaro, La Poza de Ballesteros is always somewhat fuller-bodied, more full-flavoured, and denser. Because the vineyard receives the warm afternoon sun, the grapes are riper. Nevertheless, it is not a lavish wine. The 2022 vintage has fine-grained tannins and is juicy, soft, and round on the palate, underpinned by a cool, dark minerality. The lively acidity, velvety texture and black fruit are beautifully balanced and form a charming liaison, making La Poza a harmonious red wine of the everybody’s darling type.

The 2022 La Poza de Ballesteros is always the wine I find to be riper, even if the ripeness is more and more controlled. It’s ripe but not heavy. It’s from an east-facing vineyard, but the deep soils have good hydric reserves and provide freshness. It has balance, 14.66% alcohol, a pH of 3.68 and 4.83 grams of acidity. It’s juicy and more fruit-driven but starting to show the limestone chalkiness. 4,000 bottles were filled in June 2024.

The 2022 La Poza de Ballesteros reflects a warm vintage and deeper soils with good water retention. The nose delivers ripe cherry and pomegranate, framed by notes of undergrowth. Generous and creamy in texture, the palate is fruit-forward with chalky tannins while the easygoing finish revels in its ripeness. This vineyard adapted well to the hot year.
