Description

Product description for Albert Mann Riesling Wineck-Schlossberg Grand Cru AC 2020

Wine Information

This is the second vintage of this Grand Cru from Wineck-Schlossberg. The first vintage was only sold in magnums and was very rare. The vineyard covers 27.49 hectares in the municipalities of Katzenthal and Ammerschwihr. It rises from 280 to 400 meters. The south-southeast-facing site, with its granite-rich soils, lies in the hollow of a closed, wind-protected valley. The vines date from 1957, 1966, and 1974. They are still in the transition phase to organic and biodynamic certification, as the owner previously farmed the vineyard “only” organically.

Colour

Light straw yellow

Nose

The Riesling from Wineck-Schlossberg is a delicate, fine, almost ethereal wine. It smells of ripe Riesling with a hint of nutmeg, of ripe yet mellow apples and yellow pears, of blossoms, herbs, and a hint of salted lemon. Above all, however, one has the impression of holding something very fine in the glass.

Palate

This impression is confirmed on the palate, where the wine remains just as delicate but gains in intensity. Above all, the granite of the soil brings a crystalline, vibrant, and incomparable acid structure and minerality to the wine that distinguishes it from all other Mann Rieslings. This is pure energy, but not sharp, not austere, not cutting, but fine, elegant, and almost silky. This Riesling is a remarkably beautiful addition to the portfolio.

Wine Advocate

Score: 94+

The 2020 Riesling Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg is only the second vintage of this cru, with the inaugural 2019 bottled only in magnums. The steep vineyard, with vines planted in 1957, 1966 and 1974, is still in transition to both organic and biodynamic certification, although they were only farmed organically by the owner who delivered the grapes to the Domaine Paul Blanck before but who has recently been hired by the Barthelmé family, including three hectares of vineyards. The bouquet is clear and very delicate on the nose that reveals very fine and ethereal fruit aromas that are also a bit reminiscent of Muscat d’Alsace and intertwined with delicate notes of weathered granite, herbs and even a bit of iodine. On the palate, this is a lush but refined, crystalline and very elegant Wineck-Schlossberg with remarkable intensity of fruit and terroir expression. The tannins are very fine here and interwoven with the texture and the crystalline, mineral acidity that gives this cru its spine and energy. This is an excellent new Riesling for Albert Mann. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.
