Wine Information

The so-called Le(h)ne of the Pfingstbach stream once gave the Oestrich vineyard its name. The early morning fog from the flowing stream at the foot of the vineyard always caused early morning fog. This now spreads botrytis, which is why this site produces primarily sweet Rieslings, but especially residually sweet Rieslings. At the same time, the Lenchen is also a Grosse VDP site, which is why the Kühns produced their first Grosses Gewächs in 2018 – from a plot planted in 1964. The site, with a roughly 12 to 15% gradient to the west, extends along the Pfingstbach stream above our winery directly to the north and lies at an elevation of 120–170 m. The soils consist of fertile, gravelly loess, interspersed with ferrous quartzites and clay marls. An old name for the area is “Eiserberg,” which refers to this rock base. After hand-picking, the whole grapes were pressed over several hours, the must fermented spontaneously, and the wine, without altering the natural composition of the must, aged for 18 months on the full lees in traditional “Stückfass” (1,200 l).

Nose

The Oestricher Lenchen Großes Gewächs is a wonderfully fragrant, fine Riesling, which still possesses something wild and unfettered. It has a Rheingau heart and a Jurassic soul, and the wine constantly oscillates slightly between reductive and oxidative notes, between quartz rock and crumbly stone fruit, between floral scents and hay, between chitin and lemon.

Palate

On the palate, the Riesling presents itself intensely and pure, with magnificent length and depth. This Großes Gewächs (Great Growth) offers power and energy, vibrant minerality, and punchy acidity. Despite just 1.9 grams of residual sugar and 7.5 grams of acidity, it offers a hint of lemony sweetness, combining this with mouthwatering salt and mellow fruit.
