Product description for Marco de Bartoli Integer Grillo, Sicilia DOC 2021 (bio)

Wine Information

The Grillo grapes come from vines over 20 years old and grow in western Sicily, in Contrada, Samperi, and Marsala, on limestone and sandy loam soils.

Vine Information

After careful manual selection, the grapes are gently destemmed and softly pressed to initiate spontaneous fermentation of a small portion of the batch in old barrels and with maceration on the lees. The remaining grapes are fermented on the skins, without pumping over or submerging, for 10 days in clay amphorae. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in an environment where temperature is indirectly controlled. The wine ages on its lees for at least another 10 months in clay amphorae and used oak barrels, until it reaches complete stability. It was neither re-chilled nor filtered before bottling.

Colour

Cloudy golden yellow with distinct amber inclusions.

Nose

The 2021 Integer Grillo from Marco de Bartoli is an impressive wine, as is immediately apparent on the nose. Lemon, orange zest, and honey emerge. With the necessary oxygen contact, aromas of lily of the valley and hints of lemon balm join in. Its depth and freshness are extremely impressive.

Palate

Its dense and juicy palate is fascinating. A wine that thrives on beautiful freshness and minerality, captured in a carpet of fruit, spice, and yeasty components. Distinct salty components emerge in the mid-palate, while the finish reveals citrus impressions that are very invigorating. A wine to indulge in and dream about, one that can stand on its own without any accompaniment—a true solitaire. Its strength and fullness are particularly beautiful, yet so invigorating and refreshing. Enjoy not too cold, decanted from a large glass.

Vinous

Score: 92

The savory 2021 Grillo Integer opens with a blend of gingery spice, raw almonds and dried flowers. It shows a pleasant inner sweetness and a burst of sour citrus. Vibrant acidity keeps the energy high from start to finish. The 2021 takes on a flinty character through the finale, as tart orchard fruits and suggestions of liquid stone fade.
