Product description for François de Nicolay Beaujolais-Villages, Cuvée des Beaux Jours 2020
The Gamay vines for this Beaujolais-Village are densely planted at 10,000 vines per hectare. Sand and granite lie in the subsoil. This vintage saw the estate convert to organic viticulture. The thirty-year-old vines produce approximately 40 hl per hectare. Whole-bunch vinification takes just under three weeks without the addition of sulfur. To mature, the wine is transferred to tanks for eight months.
Dark, luminous cherry red with violet reflections.
The nose strikes me as seductive, deep, and mystical. At the same time, it is uncomplicated and approachable. Violets, pansies, and hibiscus are prominent. Elderberries, blackberries, morello cherry, and cassis are equally dominant. There is even a hint of sloe, which visibly suits it well. Hints of licorice, a touch of mint, and parsley support or enhance this dense interplay of aromas of fruit and blossom.
The juiciness clearly comes through on the first sip. With crisp fruit that appears much less loudly and a concise acid structure, the Beaujolais appears taut and clear. It strongly encourages you to empty your glasses quickly. The budding fruit is repeatedly and quickly severed by the sword of acidity. This interplay continues almost indefinitely. The empty bottle brings an end. The dark fruit is kept in check by a noticeable note of menthol in the aftertaste.
