Nose

The 2015 Gore Cornas by Matthieu Barret from Domaine du Coutet has a lavish nose: Black Amarena cherries and dark chocolate open the opulent offering, closely followed by dark, spicy aromas of dried meat, black pepper, and leather. Cassis, blackberry jelly, and wet slate round out the picture.

Palate

The surprise then comes on the palate: Not opulent, full-bodied, and baroque, but fresh and drinkable, the Cornas is a fine Syrah carried by transparent sour cherry fruit, the acidity curve is long and sweeping, with room for the minerality that lends it additional freshness. Aromatically, the pendulum swings between fruit and mild spice; you can’t decide, and you’ll keep pouring more. A wonderful wine from the world of Cornas.
