Product description for Christmann Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2021 (bio)

Wine Information

Hart refers to the core of the Ölberg vineyard in Königsbach, around the Ölberg Wayside Chapel. The parcel was classified as a VDP Grosse Lage (VDP Grosse Lage) in 2013. Until this vintage, the auction wine came from the oldest part of the vineyard. Now, even the younger vines have reached a good age, allowing the Christmanns to produce a Riesling GG from the entire vineyard. Like that of Idig, the soil is characterized by tertiary limestone marl, known as terra fusca, mixed with red sandstone scree in the topsoil. The juice stood on the skins for several hours, fermented spontaneously and at a relatively high temperature, and aged in large double-barreled barrels.

Colour

Platinum

Nose

If you like, the 2021 Ölberg-Hart lies somewhere between Idig and Vogelsang in character. All three wines are distinctly stony, but the Ölberg appears darker and somewhat smokier than the Idig, but has more fruit than the Vogelsang. Verbena, mint, and sedge meet limes, lemons, and mirabelle plums. There’s also a hint of graphite and lime.

Palate

On the palate, the Ölberg-Hart initially appears very iodine-like and tart, with plenty of lemon and citrus zest, crushed rock, and herbal notes. The charm of this wine currently shines through in a light creaminess and a fine extract sweetness. The rest is pressure, tension, and minerality with high intensity.
