Wine Information

The Idig vineyard is the heart of the Christmann winery. First mentioned in the 14th century, it remains an undivided, four-hectare monopoly site to this day. The slope slopes steeply to the south-southeast and is characterized by a massive limestone subsoil and a Terra Fusca limestone scree layer with red sandstone scree and basalt. The Idig can certainly be counted among the few truly Grand Cru vineyards that Germany has to offer. The juice was left on the skins for several hours, fermented spontaneously and at a relatively warm temperature, and aged in large double-barreled casks.

Nose

The 2023 Königsbach Idig strikes me as considerably more open than 2021 or 2022. From the outset, it presents itself as cool, chalky, with herbal and then increasingly floral aromas, with fine white-fleshed fruit. Above this lies a slight reduction, below which lies a blend of bergamot, a lime that becomes more and more lemony with air, a hint of quince and apricot.

Palate

On the palate, the Idig has a lot of play, is juicy, bright, stony, and slightly zesty, but even here unusually charming and open. Finally, it becomes increasingly electrifying, with pleasant firmness and great length, salty minerality, and a gripping freshness and acidity of lemons. It is a wine of great concentration, but one that packages it with a light, airy flavour. What an unusually youthful and charming Idig and what a great wine!
