Wine Info
Olivier Humbrecht:
The Heimbourg vineyard in Turckheim is located on the south/southwest side of an Oligocene limestone hill, literally facing the Munster Valley. It’s a spectacular small single vineyard that’s quite difficult to farm. The estate owns almost two-thirds of the property, which is now planted mainly with Riesling and Pinot Gris. We also used to have Gewürztraminer, but the vines were removed after the 2012 vintage. When we decided to replant the vineyard, we opted for Riesling. These younger vines are now being used in this wine and, amazingly, are performing almost better than the older vines. We’ve seen this in many other vineyards: when a vineyard is managed biodynamically from the start, they produce their first grapes later, but because they have better rooting, the quality is there sooner. The soil can be considered late-ripening, but the exposure of this vineyard is sunny. The vines on these soils do not suffer from drought, so ripening can occur very quickly in vintages like 2022. As with its neighbor, the Grand Cru Brand, we must monitor the development of ripeness very closely to avoid harvesting overripe grapes. Fermentation was very slow but never really stopped, so the wine finishes very dry.
Color
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
The 2022 Riesling Heimbourg has an earthy and mineral aroma. Initially, one thinks of a complex Burgundy, suggesting aromas of porcini mushrooms and truffles. With oxygen, fruity aromas of apple, candied lemon peel, orange, and apricot pit, as well as linden and tree blossom, emerge. All components are powerful and beautifully interwoven.
Palate
A wine that hits the tongue with razor-sharp acidity, permeated by a subtle salty note. Extremely elegant and refreshing, the citrus and apple notes are more prominent on the tongue. A wine that will continue to develop fantastically over the next few years, with the earthy, smoky, and spicy aromas becoming more pronounced on the palate. Excellent development potential. Those impatient to open this wine now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and enjoy it from large Burgundy glasses, not too cold.

Score: 92
The 2022 Riesling Heimbourg was picked next to the Brand Grand Cru from two steep parcels, one south-west-facing, the other entirely west, rooting in poor iron-rich limestone. A touch of reduction casts a flinty haze on absolutely zesty citrus that unites Meyer lemon, grapefruit and tangerine. The palate is ripe and juicy with serene, expansive acidity that spreads a grapefruit zestiness. Beautifully nuanced aromatics make for a succulent, refreshing wine. (Bone-Dry)
