The Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire comes from a small plot near Gueberschwihr, close to the Goldert, as well as from young vines at the Grand Cru Hengst and Clos Windsbuhl. The soils—a mixture of oolitic limestone and siliceous marls—significantly shape the character of this wine. The 2023 harvest was somewhat later, but sugar levels remained moderate, resulting in a pleasantly dry style. The aromas are unusually subtle and less varietal for a Gewurztraminer—an effect of the calcareous terroir. The vines are on average 41 years old, and the yield was 51 hl/ha. Bottled in August 2024.

Colour

Intense straw yellow with bright reflections.

Nose

The 2023 Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire from Zind-Humbrecht initially appears hesitant on the nose. With increasing aeration and temperature, it begins to speak tentatively – not of roses and the like, but of mild spices such as mace and clove, which symbolize the first part of its name. Then, little by little, it noticeably begins to resemble Traminer, without, however, slipping into the exalted or even eccentric. Disciplined with cool understatement, it seems like the James Bond of Gewürztraminers.

Palate

The first sip is more spice than Traminer. The texture is also taut, with a fine tannin structure and firm tension instead of the usual oily feel. Sensorially, it appears dry, even though, at just under 7 g/l, it is on the upper end of the dry range. A sweet, extract-sweet core with light tropical fruit, cinnamon blossom, rose, and pink guava—all carried by the tight and powerful structure of this contemporary Gewürztraminer. Chapeau!
