Wine Information
Olivier Humbrecht:
Clos Windsbuhl is located above the village of Hunawihr and offers a beautiful view of the Alsatian valley floor and the famous Saint-Jacques le Majeur church. Due to its location near the Vosges Forest at an altitude of 300/350 m, this vineyard ripens relatively late, despite being on a steep east-south slope. The small “windy hill” lies on an ancient limestone cliff, the “Muschelkalk,” dating back to the Triassic period. The vines have little topsoil, are slow-growing, and are strongly influenced by the magnesium-rich, calcareous parent rock, and this also applies to the wines! In 2022, the Windsbuhl enjoyed perfect ripening conditions. The cooling effect of the altitude and the nearby forest balanced the warmth of the vintage. The Gewürztraminer ripened very well, achieving a classic sweet balance. The grapes were harvested in very healthy conditions.
Color
Bright, intense golden yellow.
Nose
The 2022 Gewurztraminer Clos Windsbuhl is simply wonderful; the aromas flow enchantingly from the glass, already animated with a freshness and minerality that is second to none. Orange granita, salted lemon, rosemary, verbena, and candied ginger combine with cinnamon and dried rose petals. All the aromas captivate with their subtlety and finesse, unfolding in a highly complex way.
Palate
This masterpiece is cool and invigorating; the delicate sweetness combines with a pleasantly tart note reminiscent of orange zest and grapefruit. The mid-palate is salty and mineral, and then it dances like a fairy into the never-ending finish. What a masterpiece of a Gewurztraminer, seducing the senses and inviting more with every sip. A wonderful solo wine and the perfect accompaniment to savory, sweet, and aromatic dishes that can be as artistic as the wine itself. It is currently in a beautifully open phase and, at the same time, possesses tremendous potential for development. Those impatient to open it now are advised to decant it at least a day in advance and enjoy it not too cold from large Burgundy glasses.

From at least 55-year-old and possibly up to 100-year-old vines, the 2022 Clos Windsbuhl Hunawihr Gewurztraminer is deep, intense, elegant and spicy on the rich and iodine nose. It’s very rich and powerful on the palate with fine tannins, fine salinity and remarkable elegance. 13.1% stated alcohol plus 39.8 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024.
