Description

Product description for Velich Welschriesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2009

Wine Information

This Trockenbeerenauslese made from Welschriesling comes from the Seewinkel region on Lake Neusiedl, where persistent early morning fog and high humidity encourage the formation of noble rot, Botrytis. This TBA is made exclusively from raisined grapes that undergo spontaneous fermentation and then mature in used barriques for more than ten years.

Colour

: dark amber.

Nose

The Trockenbeerenauslese made from Welschriesling is a fantastically complex and dense sweet wine with notes of pipe tobacco and dried dates, figs, plums, and apricots, as well as candied ginger and oranges, honey and white nougat, malt, and mocha. The TBA is already sweet on the nose, but by no means heavy.

Palate

This is also confirmed on the palate, where this viscous, highly concentrated nectar unfolds a great complexity, gliding creamy, elegant, and smooth over the tongue, revealing its greatness in the perfect balance of sweetness and lively acidity, as well as a fantastic saltiness that seems as if aged Sauternes were mixed with crème caramel au beurre salé. The long aging in wood provides plenty of structure and an additional note reminiscent of burnt almonds in vanilla, which adds further complexity to the wine on the elongated finish, where it blends with the subtle bitterness and sweetness of candied bitter orange peel. Fantastic! Especially considering the price.

Wine Advocate

Score: (99-100)

Picked at 42° KMW and aged in two barriques until this year, without the addition of sulfur for almost 13 years and still yet to be bottled, the 2009 Welschriesling Trockenbeerenauslese displays an amber color with greenish reflections. The bouquet is exciting in its intensity, purity and complexity, with salty caramel and malty/balsamic notes with orange and black tea aromas emerging from the glass. This is a highly refined and elegant TBA with stunning finesse, saline freshness and caramel and malty notes. This is a gorgeous, highly stimulating TBA of exceptional quality. Tasted as a sample in July 2022 when the wine had a total of 60 milligrams per liter of SO2; it will be bottled with a total of 100 milligrams per liter this summer or fall. Definitely a wine to have and adore!
