Product description for Trapet Alsace Gewürztraminer Sonnenglanz Grand Cru 2017 (bio)
Site Information
Just outside the village, in the northwest, at the very edge of the foothills, lies the Sonnenglanz vineyard at an altitude of 220 to 270 meters facing southeast. It enjoys a very favorable microclimate with particularly low rainfall (barely more than 500 mm per year). The soil is fairly homogeneous; the subsoil consists only of Tertiary conglomerate of the limestones of the Rhine Graben and interstratified marls from the Eo-Oligocene age, forming a fairly heavy, well-structured, and very stony limestone soil.
Color
Brilliant golden yellow.
Nose
An intense aroma wafts from the glass of the 2017 Sonnenglanz Gewurztraminer Grand Cru. Roses, hibiscus, and the scent of Earl Grey tea combine with apricot, orange zest, orange liqueur, and marzipan. A distinctive wine with rich aroma and complex depth.
Palate
Balanced sweetness and acidity lend it vibrancy. As in the previous year, the palate displays a finesse and structure reminiscent of Riesling, yet this is unmistakably Gewürztraminer—and what a Gewürztraminer it is. A wonderful representative of a grape variety for which Alsace continually sets standards—and offering unlimited creativity in the kitchen for chefs and amateur cooks.

Wine Advocate
Score: 90+?
The 2017 Sonnenglanz Gewurztraminer shows a clear and aromatic yet refined and quite open bouquet that is much less stereotypical than Gewurz normally is. The wine is pretty sweet but also dense and structured on the palate with fine tannins and delicate salinity. It has 14% stated alcohol and quite a lot of unfermented sugar that is neither really weightless nor fully integrated. The balance could be better after a decade on the bottle, though. The wine has a good and firm mineral structure for a long distance run. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2023.
