The Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean comes from the eponymous 1er Cru Climat. The Clos Saint-Jean comprises the actual Clos Saint-Jean (5.08 hectares), Les Rébiches (5.45 hectares), Les Murées (1.61 hectares), and the Chassagne du Clos Saint-Jean (2.02 hectares). It is the original, enclosed clos belonging to the nunnery of Saint-Jean le Grand in Autun and was planted in 589. The majority of the vineyard has red soil. This is where Thomas Morey produces the red Clos Saint-Jean, which currently comes primarily from vines planted in 2017. The largely destemmed grapes are fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrels and tanks. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally. The proportion of new wood is around 20%. Sulfurization only takes place in the last six months in the barrel, and this is done several times with minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l overall.

Fairly transparent, bright ruby.

Nose

Thomas Morey’s Clos St.-Jean comes from a young vineyard and presents a youthful fragrance with a tendency towards red berries and cherries with some accents of undergrowth, fine oak, and a hint of cinnamon. This is attractive.

Palate

On the palate, this is an aromatically lively, fresh, and cheerful wine. Structurally and texturally, it is not yet where it should be. The tannin still coats the palate and somewhat inhibits the flow. However, there is a very pleasant red cherry fruit in the juicy finish. Just wait and see; the wine is still young; it has potential and will find its way.
