The Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot comes from the 1er Cru Climat of the same name. Morgeot is a large Climat with 58.16 hectares, half-pente on the Santenay side. The 1er Cru comprises various subdivisions. These include Fairendes, Brussonnes, and Petit Clos, which are used here because they have white soils in a Climat otherwise reserved for Pinot Noir. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in a combination of neutral barrels and tanks. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally, and the wine remains on its lees without any bâtonnage. The proportion of new wood is around 20%. Sulfur addition only takes place during the last six months in the barrel, and this is done several times with minimal doses, so that the wine never exceeds 35 mg/l in total.

Nose

Thomas Morey’s Morgeot 2023 is a fragrant Chassagne-Montrachet with a very fine use of wood, typical of Thomas Morey, and a corresponding touch of reduction. In addition to local fruit notes, there is a slight exoticism and some lanolin, blossoms, and shrubbery in the balanced aromas.

Palate

The Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot also appears fine and fragrant on the palate. Yes, it currently appears to be the finest and most elegant wine among the 1er Crus. However, one should not underestimate how much power it possesses beneath the surface. The intensity is only apparent on the second sip, or when one explores this weight and density in the long finish.
