Product description for Tement Ried Sulz Weisser Burgunder, Erste STK Lage 2021 (bio)
Info
The 2021 vintage at Tement offers crystal-clear, mature wines based on perfect grape material. January and February were characterized by beautiful, sunny winter days. Dry and sunny, making it perfect for pruning. March followed, which was cool and rather humid, slightly delaying bud break. April and May were also characterized by rather cool and humid weather. Early summer was rather moderate, with later-than-usual flowering. July and August then provided ideal conditions, allowing the slight delay in the vineyard to be almost fully recovered. The Sulz vineyard is home to the house’s Pinot Blanc. This warm, enclosed basin site is located at 400 to 473 m above sea level. The vines grow there on a 35% slope on limestone marl and loamy sandy soils. The site leans south-southwest. After natural fermentation, the wine matures for 30 months on the fine lees in large, neutral oak barrels. It is bottled without filtration.
Colour
Bright straw yellow with golden reflections
Nose
This Weisser Burgunder from the Ried Sulz winery displays a deliberate maturity. This makes it surprisingly open and approachable. At the same time, it thrives on a certain depth and tranquility. The fruit surprisingly also has red elements. Nutty and yeasty at the same time, thanks to the long lees aging at Tement. Chopped almonds and fresh yeast plaited bread with marzipan and sugar glaze. The skin of red apples is enormously present for me – one of my favorite childhood memories. White currants, ripe pears, and mirabelle plums join in. Cardamom and cinnamon add spice. Garden cress, lemon balm, and sage contribute freshness. White pepper and coriander seeds are reserved for the more patient on the path of exploration. Apple and almond blossoms provide a gentle elegance.
Palate
The Styrian is clear, taut, extremely precise, and clean. It represents a high-acid Pinot Blanc, which I consider very positive. It displays zero melting and thrives on its pure, linear, chalky character. The fruit is more yellow than green, with excursions toward red. The red apple skin dominates again with its rich structure. The juiciness is not excessive, broad, or heavy. Its flow is enormous, with a distinct herbal intensity. It is challenging and clear in its progression. A Pinot Blanc for advanced drinkers.
