Rino Sottimano started small but mighty, acquiring vineyards in the renowned Barbaresco “Cotta” site. Over the years, he added prime plots in the Curra, Fausoni, Basarin, and Pajorè sites. Since 1990, the vineyards have been cultivated without the use of chemical-synthetic pesticides or artificial fertilizers. In traditional winemaking, maceration and fermentation last 12 to 24 days. Rino’s son Andrea ferments the wines only spontaneously and uses no other cellar-technical aids. Malolactic fermentation also takes place spontaneously in French barriques, with the use of new barriques so discreetly that the wood flavor is barely noticeable. After aging, the wine is bottled without filtration or any other fining. The wines impress with their delicate fruitiness, elegance, subtlety, and yet savory character.

Fruit for this wine comes exclusively from the Basarin cru. The Sottimano 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo shows pretty aromas of mint, blueberry and delicate violets. The wine does have a slightly herbal side, resulting in a botanical feel. Fermentation includes 50 days of skin contact, and the results are fresh, lightly tannic and medium in intensity.

The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is Barbaresco in all but name because of its slightly earlier release. Crushed flowers, spice, tobacco, cedar and bright Nebbiolo acids are nicely delineated. In 2022, the Langhe Nebbiolo has a bit more mid-palate richness than in most years, but that is not a bad thing for a wine meant to be enjoyed over the near and medium term.
