Description
Product description for Pian Dell’Orino Brunello di Montalcino Bassolino di Sopra DOCG 2015
The harvest of the healthy and perfectly ripe grapes from the Bassolino di Sopra vineyard began on September 27th and was the culmination of an exceptional vintage. The Bassolino di Sopra comes from a single vineyard, Pian di Bassolino, in the Santa Fiora geological formation on the southeastern slope of Montalcino. Grown at 330-390m above sea level, the vines are an average age of 17 years. After multiple, rigorous sorting of the grapes during hand-picking in the vineyard, grape reception, and at the sorting table, spontaneous fermentation began immediately, reaching a maximum temperature of 32°C and completing after 15 days. The entire maceration period, from maceration to racking, lasted eight weeks. It then aged for 46 months in 20-hectoliter oak barrels until bottling in September 2019 and release to the market in October 2021.
Colour
Ruby red with a dark core.
Nose
The 2015 Bassolino die Sopra from Pian dell’Orino exudes its monumental perfume from the glass with the self-confidence of a ruler. With fruity opulence as well as tremendous density and concentration, its multi-layered, complex essence reveals itself to the blessed drinker nuance by nuance: Dark black cherries are surrounded by a hint of bitter chocolate, the dark red berry fruit appears in an alliance of mild spices such as cloves, juniper, and black pepper, ethereally overlaid with notes of sandalwood and the distinctive core note of fully ripe sloe berries. On the nose, it constantly shimmers like the hot sun over the asphalt on the summer horizon, and makes the lips purse towards the glass in impatient anticipation.
Palate
Juicy, fleshy, and fluffy, it coats the palate completely in red velvet. The opening is marked by extract-rich fruit with its superbly stimulating, silky mouthfeel, which, like the finest wine, is woven with the polished tannins of Sangiovese, lending it its invigoratingly tart contours; tightly woven, dense, and low-textured. Despite its youthful, boisterous nature, it reveals itself as open-hearted, plump, and expansive, without compromising its complexity—everything is in the right place here. With profound impact, it slides across the palate like black velvet, telling of the vintage, the grape variety, its aging, the future, and glasses emptied far too quickly. Whether now, in five, or ten years. Promised.
