Description
Product description for Peter Jakob Kühn Riesling Lenchen Auslese VDP Grosse Lage 2017 (bio)
Wine Information
The so-called Le(h)ne of the Pfingstbach stream once gave the Oestrich vineyard its name. The early morning mists of the flowing stream at the foot of the vineyard always ensure early morning mists. This promotes the spread of botrytis, which is why this site primarily produces noble sweet Rieslings.
Colour
Light golden yellow
Nose
The aroma of Lenchen is reminiscent of the scent of meadow orchards at harvest time. Some apples and pears have already fallen and, bursting open, exude their fragrance. There is also a hint of honey, but above all something exotic from the neighboring orangery. Citronelle, kumquats, and grapefruit can be found here alongside orchard fruit, but also some passion fruit that someone has rubbed over a stone slab.
Palate
With the challenging 2017 acidity, this Auslese shines on the palate. Both are kept absolutely in check. This allows the rich fruit of pome fruit, fresh and dried stone fruit, and exotic notes to remain suspended. The body is permeated by a fine, almost soft and creamy acidity. This is complemented by a dip of salt and rock. It’s wonderfully clear and elegant.

A penetratingly high-toned nose points toward subtle botrytis-influence, but this elixir issued primarily from purplish, precariously overripe yet still-juicy berries. Almond extract, quince preserves, poire distillate, mint, iris and gentian are among the elements of a remarkably kaleidoscopic aromatic display. The silken, glycerol-rich palate offers seductive sheer succulence of quince, pear and white peach along with unexpectedly bright juiciness of fresh lime and striking transparency to myriad floral essences. Hints of fruit pip piquancy and bite of crystallized ginger serve for stimulating counterpoint. Liquefied gentian and buddleia, pear and peach nectars are joined by scallop-like umami to inform a mouthwateringly long, luscious, downright lilting finish. This bottling represents a mere 100 liters from selective pickings of what was left hanging from mid-October through the first week of November. “To be honest,” remarks Kühn to my surprise, “I’d rather have an Auslese even finer and with a little less sheer concentration than this one.” I’m with him completely in cherishing Auslesen that can dance, but this one is a terrific example!
