Description

Product description for Nikolaihof Vom Stein, Riesling Smaragd trocken 2019 (bio)

Wine Information

The Riesling grapes are grown on loamy, clayey soils with Danube gravel. The “Vom Stein” vineyard is a sub-vineyard of the Silberbichl, located east of the town of Mautern on gently sloping terrain. The vines are generally old (approx. 50-60 years old), but a severe winter frost in the early 2000s caused approximately 20% of the vineyard to fail. The vines planted at that time are generally harvested separately and, if necessary, vinified separately. The vines were aged partly in steel, partly in used oak, with long aging on the full lees and completely without fining. The wine was bottled in April 2023.

Colour

Light golden yellow with silvery reflections.

Nose

The 2019 Riesling Ried vom Stein Smaragd has an enchanting aroma of a flower meadow, playful citrus fruit, quince, apple, smoky minerality, and cool finesse. Its vibrancy and depth are immediately apparent in the nose.

Palate

On the tongue, its fresh acidity and invigorating citrus and apple notes paired with fine tannins create a lively yet impressively powerful drinking experience. A wine that loves to accompany intense cuisine and, in terms of aging potential, is built to last.

Wine Advocate

Score: 93

Aged for four-and-one-half years in large wooden casks, the 2019 Ried Vom Stein Riesling Smaragd opens with a clear, pure and intense as well as savory/mineral nose that represents the Danube gravel of this terroir that is intermingled with loess and loam. On the palate, this is a rich and round, dense and savory/saline-finishing Riesling that is not bone dry and stopped the natural fermentation with 3.8 grams per liter of residual sugar. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2025.

Vinous

Score: 94

The 2019 Riesling vom Stein Smaragd smells of fresh Mirabelle, ripe Amalfi lemon and a touch of chervil on a yeasty, smooth nose. The palate presents all this in one smooth, cooling flow, with notions of lemon becoming ever more prominent and apricot making a charming, perfumed appearance. Riesling’s exuberance has been tamed into soothing mildness here. Full marks for charm and exquisite purity of fruit. (Bone-dry)
