Description

Product description for Nikolaihof Im Weingebirge, Grüner Veltliner Federspiel trocken 2014 (bio)

Archive Release 2024.

Origin

The “Im Weingebirge” vineyard is a so-called “vineyard within a vineyard.” It belongs to the “Alte Point” vineyard and borders the “Strudel” and “Süßenberg” vineyards above Mautern. The site covers a full six hectares and extends northwards from 206 to 225 meters up the slope. The subsoil is dominated by paragneiss, which here and there reaches the surface. The topsoil consists of clay and, above all, loess.

Colour

A strong golden yellow hue gives an idea of the array of aromas that will inspire the nose and the flavours to expect in the mouth.

Nose

However, a bulbous glass with plenty of volume for oxygen absorption is required, or you can decant the wine 1-2 hours before consumption. Then the mature bouquet reveals numerous fruit notes, including clearly recognizable dried apricots, mirabelle plums, apple slices, and orange peel. The popular bread crust, butter biscuits, and caramel are just as present as candied fruit and porcini mushrooms.

Palate

Behind this lies a lightweight body whose astonishing acidity catapults the wine to unexpected heights, like a pole vault, in this case towards a natural wine. A medium-bodied GV with grip and character, a pronounced saltiness on the lips, and an excellent deep presence on the finish. One that’s completely out of the ordinary!

Wine Advocate

Score: 90

The golden-yellow colored 2014 Ried Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Federspiel (Late Release) opens with a pure, intense and elegant, pretty matured bouquet with pancake notes and nuances of crushed rocks. Light to medium-bodied yet quite intense on the palate, this is a fine and elegant, quite substantial and tightly mineral Federspiel that drinks fine today and will over the next couple of years, but I wouldn’t expect a further development here. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025.
