Marco de Bartoli is essentially two wineries: Samperi is located in the classic Marsalla region in western Sicily and is the nucleus of the company. Bukkuram (Arabic for “Lord of the Wines”) is the name of the winery on Pantelleria, the small volcanic island 100 km southwest of Sicily. Marco de Bartoli, a racing driver in his younger years, was a bundle of energy whose courage and dedication contributed to the appreciation of Sicilian wines today, which was completely different from what they enjoyed 20 years ago. His children, Renato, Sebastiano, and Gipi, continue the winery in their father’s spirit. His motto, loosely adapted from Gaudi, was: “Originality is achieved by going back to the roots.” The winery is dedicated to the indigenous grape varieties Grillo, Zibibbo, Catarratto, Lucido, and Pignatello.
