Description
Jean-Michel Stephan founded his winery in 1991 with three hectares in the commune of Tupin. A young winemaker who had learned from Jean-Paul Brune, he was lucky enough to be able to acquire a vineyard with very old vines at that time. After the purchase, Stephan quickly realised that he had something very special in front of him. The vineyard, whose oldest plots date back to 1896 and 1902, contained the Sérine grape variety. He replanted a second vineyard and vinified his first wine in 1994. Jean-Michel Stephan’s Côte Rôtie are wines of great personality and consistency. The specificity of the Sérine grape variety plays just as big a role as the world-class terroir and the winemaker’s special approach with macération carbonique in the cellar. His wines not only have the typicality of the grape varieties and the terroir, they are also of exceptional clarity and forcefulness.
