Product description for Loimer Anning Pinot Noir 2019 (bio)
About the Wine
Grapes were cultivated in this climatically favorable region south of Vienna over 2,000 years ago. The vines benefit from the Pannonian climate, with hot summers and dry autumns. Constant air movement in the autumn allows the grapes to dry quickly after dew or rain. The relatively heavy soils with a high shell limestone content give the wine character and depth. The underlying weathered debris aids drainage and warming, thus allowing for the harvest of fully ripe, healthy grapes. The Anninger is a 700-meter-high mountain at the easternmost foothills of the Alps. Gumpoldskirchen and the vineyards for this wine are located at the foot of the Anninger.
Vinification Information
Selective hand-harvesting into 20 kg crates on September 3rd and 5th. 100% maceration with stems (whole grapes without crushing). Spontaneous fermentation in 2,200 l used oak fermentation stands for 2 weeks at a maximum temperature of 30°C. Aging for 12 months in 300 l oak barrels and 6 months in large oak barrels. Bottling took place unfiltered on April 12th, 2021.
Colour
Brilliant ruby red with violet reflections.
Nose
A true seducer announces itself on the nose with the 2019 Pinot Noir Anning from Fred Loimer: sour cherries, plums, sweet berries, and distinct floral hints of peony, ivy, and elderberry. Bay leaves, licorice, and pickled cranberries are also evident, all rounded off by a refreshing note reminiscent of wild mint and rosemary.
Palate
Lively, taut, with youthful acidity and a ripe yet still youthful tannin structure, this is an extremely elegant wine that is still in its infancy, but with a little patience, will fully realize its noble Burgundian potential. A dream companion to braised dishes and dishes with fruity and herbal components. If possible, give it a few more years of maturation; the impatient should enjoy it slightly chilled from a carafe and large Burgundy glasses.

Wine Advocate
Score: 94
Loimer’s Traisental 2019 Anning Gumpoldskirchen Pinot Noir is deep, intense and polished on the pure and elegant nose that is reminiscent of dark and ripe cherries, earth, forest floor and crushed, rather graveled stones. The palate is tight and tensioned, beautifully pure and finessed but most of all characterized by tightly woven tannins, fresh fruit and an incredibly vivacious stony structure. This is an impressive red wine from the first attack until the finish, which is long and muscular but moderate in power, zero in sweetness and impressive in style. Has Kamptal-based Fred Loimer become a top Austrian red wine maker in the end? This is somewhere between 93 and 94 points, but today is a 94-point day. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2022.
