Wine Information

La Bonnode borders the La Combe DesRoches vineyard and covers two hectares at an altitude of 250 meters, facing east at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson. The 35-year-old vines are mostly surrounded by old bushes. The soils of limestone marl and light clay are ideal for Chardonnay. The harvest took place from August 27 to 31, 2020, about three weeks earlier than in 2019. The Chardonnay was whole-bunch pressed and fermented spontaneously. It then aged for over 17 months in foudres and 228-liter pièces. Malolactic fermentation followed. The added sulphur in the Zen cuvée is only 20 mg/l.

Nose

The 2020 La Bonnode Cuvée Zen differs from the classic cuvée in that it contains 15 mg less sulfur. This reduction in sulphur alters the wine in that its aroma is somewhat more austere and firm, a bit more yeasty and piquant. Naturally, the successful citrus freshness is also evident here, combined with slightly creamy notes. Lemons, their peel, and a light lemon curd variant mingle with crushed oyster shells, lime, chalk, dried herbs, and verbena. But there is also a note of blond tobacco, some graphite, juniper, and a hint of charcoal.

Palate

The La Bonnode Cuvée Zen is also characterized by coolness and clarity on the palate. The wine appears—who would be surprised with less sulfur?—more open. The jacket is already off, the first button undone. The clarity remains, the fruit is somewhat warmer than in the classic cuvée. There’s more orange than lemon, more yellow than green pear. This wine also features a slightly tart and piquant, slightly tobacco finish with a certain tannin, but also a touch of yeasty silkiness. The acidity is brilliant and provides plenty of energy.
