Nose

The 2023 Großes Gewächs from the Eitelsbach Karthäuserhofberg opens with notes of lemons and greengage, a touch of mint, and other garden herbs. A hint of rock smoke and perhaps a touch of reduction and some licorice hang over everything.

Palate

On the palate, the GG is pleasantly lean and urgent, with powerful malic acid and many tart notes. There’s plenty of tension and beautiful precision. Above all, the wine’s finish is bone dry, characterized by lemons, bergamots, more mint, and wet gravel.

The 2022 Riesling Karthäuserhofberg Grosses Gewächs comes from the single parcel Kronenberg at the top of the Karthäuserhofberg. An ethereal note of lemon appears ahead of a gentle creaminess and more air adds hayflower. The palate already has a balm-like smoothness with a light body, edged by a slight pithiness that almost attains a sense of dried lemon peel. All is gentle with lovely fluidity.
