The 2022 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes has turned out beautifully, wafting from the glass with notes of cassis, rose petals and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered palate with a cool core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the floral finish. Especially suave and perfumed, it’s reminiscent of a purer, more integrated version of Bouley’s 2019.

The 2021 Volnay Clos des Chênes 1er Cru is another demonstration of how this challenging season managed to produce some gems. Ordered from a restaurant list, it has a bright bouquet with vivid redcurrant and cranberry scents laced with Earl Grey. It’s not powerful, but very well delineated. The palate is likewise framed by fine tannins, crisp red berry fruit notes and an inescapable sense of terroir on the tensile finish. This is a nimble and precise Clos des Chêne that is drinking perfectly now, though it will continue to drink well for a decade at least. This was tasted at Bar du Square in Beaune.
