Nose

A nose like a continent. If one seeks superlatives to describe density, complexity, and multifacetedness, one would want to squeeze greatness into a few lines. The wine is most like a great perfume, not merely divided into top, heart, and base notes, but always involving the wearer. And so the 1997 Le Mont Moelleux 1ère Trie from Domaine Huet does just that, like a perfume, enticing with orange oil and dried quince in the top note. This is followed by kumquats, candied fruits, and delicate spicy notes of light tobacco leaf, white pepper, turmeric, and saffron. Despite the conglomerate of aromas, the nose is completely clear, crystalline, and precise—an example of maturity without the veneer of age. Superb!

Palate

On the palate, the 1997 Le Mont is juicy with a relaxed, unfussy texture. Its youthful viscosity gives way to a relaxed flow, with a clear mouthfeel that meets perfect ripeness, and a touch of lime zest provides aromatic freshness. It flows wirily across the palate with a fine, piquant acidity and a powerful, mineral, pleasant finish. A wine that thrives on ample aeration and should be enjoyed from large, closed white wine glasses.
