Product description for HM Lang Riesling Riede Steiner Schreck “This is not a love song” 2020 (bio)
Information about the wine
This is a Riesling from 80-year-old vines from Steiner Schreck plots, which are cultivated according to Demeter standards. The Steiner Schreck lies around 320 meters above sea level and is one of the steepest sites in the Krems Valley. It is characterized by Gföller gneiss and granite. The Riesling was harvested on September 15, 2020. It was pressed extremely slowly over two days on the self-designed 100-ton tree press. The pressing process itself is completely reductive, but afterward the juice is given time to brown, meaning it is deliberately exposed to oxidation. The juice is fermented spontaneously and aged for two and a half years on the full lees in a 1,000-liter Bordeaux earthenware amphora, which allows for micro-oxygenation similar to that of a large wooden barrel. During fermentation, Lang adds 5 to 6% of stemless berries, which ferment intercellularly (as in carbonic maceration), thus continually restarting the fermentation process despite the constant 9°C in the cellar. In February 2022, the wine was bottled unfiltered and lightly sulfurized, with 0 g/l sugar and 8.5 g/l total acidity.

Nose
Similar to the winery’s Grüner Veltliners, the Riesling should also be served in a Burgundy glass so that it can develop fully, as young as it is. The nose of This is not a love song … is delicate and – typical of the grape variety – somewhat more floral, juicy, and sensual than that of the Grüner Veltliner. The Riesling’s initial aroma is reminiscent of gooseberries, yellow citrus fruits, mirabelle plums, and herbs, along with a hint of crushed rock, and regardless of the vintage, it has an overtone of verbena. The aroma always remains subtle. Lang’s wines are not aromatic daredevils, but rather wines of texture and structure.
Palate
This very character is then revealed directly on the palate, where the Riesling from Steiner Schreck appears piquant and salty. It is reminiscent of graphite, and its texture resembles the finest sandpaper, as is often the case with wines aged in amphorae. The fine texture, which also includes a very light tannin, develops quite differently in amphorae than in wood or even stainless steel. The Riesling is crystalline and clear, and with a quite powerful acidity, it is nevertheless charming and sensual, which also has to do with delicate floral, apple, and herbal notes. The wine’s youthfulness becomes apparent when you taste it over several days, during which it becomes increasingly elegant and silky, without losing its tension and the electrifying minerality. It is and remains a truly unique Riesling.
