In the hilly hinterland of Palermo lies the family winery Azienda Agricola Case Alte di Giuseppe Vaccaro. In the 1950s, the proud farmer Giuseppe Vaccaro recognised the excellent conditions of his farm for winegrowing and planted Catarratto and Nerello Mascalese. Encouraged by the steadily increasing demand, Giuseppe bought a house in the Contrada Macellarotto – the Azienda Agricola Case Alte was founded. Together with his son Calogero, he planted new vineyards and had the foresight to use autochthonous grape varieties such as Catarratto, Grillo, and Nero d’Avola, as well as Syrah. From the beginning, the land was cultivated according to organic guidelines out of respect for the soil, and it has never seen artificial fertilisers, pesticides, or herbicides. In 2010 the winery was completely rebuilt to meet all the requirements of organic viticulture. Today, Giuseppe Vaccaro is the third generation to run the winery.
