Information about the wine

For this wine, Boris Champy used Pinot Noir from the En Bignon plot in Bouze-les-Beaune. The plot lies at 421 meters above sea level. Its soil is characterized by red clay and limestone marl. Boris Champy’s vineyards were planted in the 1980s with a vine density of over 10,000, using Lyra and Guyot systems. Due to the vintage, which featured botrytise, he completely destemmed the grapes, treated the stems with sulfur, and formed a millefeuille of layers of destemmed grapes and stalks to ferment the grapes. He gently extracted the wine and aged it in foudres for twelve months, with 15% of the wine being aged in new oak.

Nose

Boris Champy’s Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune “Altitude 421 En Bignon” 2021 presents itself delicately and fragrantly with floral notes. These lie above notes of plums, black cherries and sweet cherries, red currants, and cranberries. The wine showcases both sides of Pinot Noir: the fragrant dark fruit as well as the sweet and earthy. These are accompanied by a skillful use of oak.

Palate

On the palate, the Altitude 421 is an athlete. One thinks of the “Ironman” triathlon, for example. The Pinot has not an ounce of excess fat, showing its athleticism right up to the finish. It is a delicate wine with a lively acidity, bright and fine fruit with subtle phenolics and what feels like zero extraction.
