Nose

The nose of the 2018 Riesling Reserve vom Kalkstein from Battenfeld Spanier’s Treasure Collection is constantly changing, like a kaleidoscope. Spicy notes of grain and malt create a robust opening, until tart notes of grapefruit and yellow fruit nuances emerge. Only the peach peel, more citrus fruits, salty notes, and wet chalk take over, outlining it as a cool wine that radiates a certain calm and somehow seems to be granting you an audience.

Palate

On the first sip, the grapefruit is immediately prominent; the oils of the peel and the tartness of the white mesocarp underpin the sublime fruit. The overall framing is rather tart, which lends it its sexiness: chamomile blossoms, oyster shells, and a cool sea breeze provide the aromatic contours, while the powerful fruit pushes forward on the midpalate. The wine shows a delicate beginning of ripeness and has been aged in the winery’s cellar since bottling.
