Description
Aphros Wine was founded in 2004 by Vasco Croft. The former architect and anthroposophist saw the opportunity to realise his idea of biodynamic wine production in his grandmother’s quinta. This type of viticulture is not widespread in Portugal. The 19,000 winegrowers in the Vinho Verde region mostly sell their grapes. Croft had the opportunity to restore the 17th century Quinta do Casal do Paço and re-cultivate the vineyards. There, in the Lima sub-region, the Loureiro and Vinhão grape varieties dominate. Both play a decisive role in his wines. With Phaunus, he has established a second line, with which he returns to winemaking methods that are as archaic as they are modern: The focus is on ageing in amphorae, the amount of sulphur has been greatly reduced, and while the classic sparkling wines play an important role at Aphros, it is the Pet Nat that plays the most important role at Phaunus.
